Ephesians 1:1-2  Faithful, Chosen, and Covered by Grace & Peace

Paul begins his letter to the Ephesians by reminding believers who they are in Christ. In just two verses, he gives us a picture of identity, purpose, and the gifts God places over His people. As we begin our study of Ephesians this year, we want families to see how these truths shape the way we “walk worthy” together at school, at home, and in our community.

 

What Paul says about us

Faithful

To be faithful means staying loyal to Jesus, trusting God completely, and obeying His teachings every day. It means letting your belief in Christ guide your actions, treating others with love, and remaining steady even in hard times. Faithfulness isn’t perfection, it’s choosing Jesus again and again.

Saints

A saint is someone cleaned from sin and chosen by God for a special purpose. Paul isn’t talking about “super Christians.” He’s talking about everyday believers (students, teachers, and families) who belong to Jesus and are set apart to live differently.

In Christ

To be in Christ means everything we have from God is given by grace through Jesus, not earned by human perfection. We receive God’s love, forgiveness, and help even though we don’t deserve them. Our identity starts with Him.

 

The Gifts God Gives Us

Grace

Grace in everyday life means kindness, fairness, and gentleness. But God’s grace is even greater.  His undeserved favor, the free gift of salvation, and the divine power He has given us through Jesus. Grace means God pours out love and strength even when we haven’t earned it.

Peace

Peace in daily life is quietness, safety, and calm. But God’s peace is deeper. It’s a steady inner calm that stays strong even during hard times. Scripture calls this shalom: complete well‑being.

God’s peace is:

  • Calm inside trials — this is not the absence of trouble, but a calm heart while trouble happens around you. In John 16:33 it says “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.” True peace does not come from a trouble free life, but from a secure relationship with Jesus who has already defeated the ultimate power of those troubles.
  • Beyond logic — Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”  Think about the phrase “surpasses all understanding” this means God gives a peace so strong, steady, and supernatural that it doesn’t make sense based on what’s happening around you, but it guards your heart anyway.
  • A gift from Jesus — John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful” This means Jesus gives a peace that keeps your heart calm and brave. It is peace the world can’t give and can’t take away.

How We Receive God’s Peace

  • Prayer — In several verses throughout His word, God tells us not to worry, but to pray with thankful hearts. His peace guards our minds. (Philippians 4:6 ; Colossians 4:2 & 3:17 ; 1 Thessalonians 5:18)
  • Trust — Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you.” This says God keeps people in perfect peace when their minds stay focused on Him.

Family Connection: Walking Worthy Together

Paul’s greeting reminds us of three truths: We are faithful in Christ. We are saints. We are covered by grace and peace. This identity shapes how we treat one another, how we face challenges, and how we live out our faith as a family.

Family Discussion Questions

  • Faithfulness at home — What does it look like for our family to stay faithful to Jesus in everyday moments?
  • Saints in our house — How does knowing we are “saints” change the way we speak to and treat each other?
  • Receiving and giving grace — Where have we seen God’s grace this week? How can we show grace to others?
  • Peace in hard moments — What helps us remember God’s peace when life feels stressful or uncertain?
  • Walking worthy — What is one small step we can take as a family to walk worthy of God’s calling this week?

Family Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling our family Your saints, people You have cleaned, chosen, and deeply love. Thank You for giving us grace we don’t earn and peace we can’t explain. Jesus, we receive the special peace You give, the kind that keeps our hearts calm and brave even when life feels stressful. Help us stay faithful to You in our everyday moments, showing kindness, forgiveness, and grace to one another. Guard our hearts and minds with Your steady peace, and keep us focused on You so our family can walk worthy of the calling You have placed on us. Amen
