Ephesians 1:22-23
"And he subjected everything under his feet and appointed him as head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way."
Paul continues describing the greatness of Jesus and His authority. God has placed everything under Christ's rule and has appointed Him as the Head of the church. Jesus is not distant from His people. He lovingly leads, guides, and cares for His church, which Scripture describes as His body. Every believer is part of this spiritual family. Christ fills His church with His presence, power, and purpose so that His people can reflect Him in the world. Knowing that Jesus is our Head reminds us that we belong to Him and can trust His leadership every day.
Subjected Everything Under His Feet: Placed everything under His authority and control. Like a king who rules over an entire kingdom, except Jesus' authority extends over all creation.
Head Over Everything: The leader who directs, guides, and cares for others. Like the head of a body directs the movement of every part.
Church: All believers in Jesus everywhere, not just a building. Like a family joined together by a shared relationship with Christ.
His Body: A picture showing the close connection between Christ and believers. Just as every part of a body works together, Christians are united under Christ's leadership.
Fullness: The completeness of Christ's presence and work among His people. Like a lamp filled with light that shines brightly in a dark room.
Fills All Things in Every Way: Christ's presence and power extend everywhere. Nothing exists outside His care, authority, or influence.
God has placed all things under the authority of Christ. Nothing is outside His control.
Connecting Scripture & Explanation
Psalm 8:6 – “You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet…” God created people and gave them the special responsibility of caring for the world He made. Everything in creation belongs to God, but He trusted humans to look after His animals, plants, land, and resources wisely. This verse reminds us that we are God's caretakers and should treat His creation with love, respect, and responsibility.
Matthew 28:18 – “Jesus came near and said to them, ‘All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.’” After His resurrection, Jesus reminded His disciples that He is King over everything. His authority comes from God and extends over all of heaven and earth. This means Jesus has the power to lead, protect, guide, and fulfill His promises. Because He is in control, we can trust Him with every part of our lives.
Knowing that Jesus is in control of everything gives us confidence to trust Him, follow His guidance, and rest in His care every day.
God appointed Christ as the Head of the church. He lovingly leads, protects, and guides His people.
Connecting Scripture & Explanation
Colossians 1:18 – “He is also the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the first born from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything.” Jesus is the leader of the church and the most important person in our lives. Just as a head directs the body, Jesus guides His people. He is called the "firstborn from the dead" because He rose from the dead and conquered death forever. Because of who He is and what He has done, Jesus deserves first place in everything we think, do, and value.
Ephesians 5:23 – “…because the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of the body.” This verse teaches that God designed marriage to reflect the relationship between Christ and the church. Just as Jesus lovingly leads, protects, cares for, and serves His people, a husband is called to lovingly lead his family. The focus of this verse is not on power or importance, but on loving responsibility, sacrifice, and care. Jesus is the perfect example of leadership because He gave His life for those He loves.
Jesus is the loving Head of the church who leads, guides, protects, and cares for His people, and He deserves first place in every part of our lives.
Paul describes the church as Christ's body. Every believer has a place and purpose within God's family.
Connecting Scripture & Explanation
1 Corinthians 12:27 – “Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it.” Paul teaches that everyone who follows Jesus is part of God's family and has an important place in it. Just as a body has many parts that work together, Christians are meant to work together to serve God and help one another. No one is more important than another because each person has unique gifts and abilities that God can use.
Romans 12:4-5 – “Now as we have many parts in one body, and all the parts do not have the same function, in the same way we who are many are one body in Christ and individually members of one another.” God created each person with unique gifts, abilities, and responsibilities. Just as a body has different parts like hands, feet, eyes, and ears that all work together, Christians are meant to work together as one family in Christ. Even though we are different, we each have an important role, and we need one another to grow and serve God well.
Because every believer is a valued part of Christ's body, God calls us to use our unique gifts to work together, support one another, and serve Him as one united family.
Paul says the church is "the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way." Jesus is not absent from His people. He actively works in and through them.
Connecting Scripture & Explanation
John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.” Jesus compares Himself to a vine and His followers to branches. Just as branches must stay connected to the vine to receive what they need to grow and produce fruit, we must stay close to Jesus. When we spend time with Him through prayer, reading the Bible, and obeying His Word, He helps us grow spiritually and live in ways that honor God.
Colossians 2:9-10 – “For the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ, and you have been filled by him, who is the head over every ruler and authority.” Jesus is fully God. Everything that makes God who He is lives in Jesus. Because we belong to Jesus, He gives us everything we need to grow in faith and live for Him. Jesus is greater than every leader, power, and authority, and nothing is above Him.
Jesus is the source of our spiritual strength, and as we stay connected to Him, He fills us with everything we need to grow, serve, and live for God.
Family Connection: Living as Part of Christ's Body
Paul reminds us that:
As a family, we can rejoice that we belong to Jesus. He is the perfect Head who lovingly leads His people. We are never alone because Christ is with us, and we are connected to God's family through Him. As we follow Jesus together, He helps us grow, serve others, and reflect His love to the world.
