Ephesians 1:11-12

“In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of His glory.”

Paul continues his blessing by showing us something deeply comforting: God has a plan, and He has placed us inside that plan on purpose. These verses help us see that our identity and purpose are not random…they are rooted in God’s will and anchored in Christ.

Chosen: God picked you on purpose because He loves you. Like choosing someone for your team because you want them with you.

Predestined: God planned good things for your life long before you were born. Like a teacher preparing a special assignment just for you ahead of time.

God’s Will: What God wants and knows is best. Like a parent guiding you toward what keeps you safe and helps you grow.

Works Out Everything: God is always working behind the scenes, even when life feels confusing. Like a coach helping the whole team work together even when you can’t see the whole plan.

Hope in Christ: Trusting Jesus with your life, your future, and your heart. Like holding onto a strong rope that keeps you safe during a climb.

Praise of His Glory: Living in a way that shows how good God is. Like shining a flashlight so others can see something amazing.

What Paul Says About Us

  1. We Are Chosen by God

Paul reminds believers that we are chosen…not by accident, not by chance, but by God’s loving decision.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation:

  • Ephesians 1:4 – “For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him.” This means God picked you on purpose before the world even existed, because He wanted you close to Him and growing in His love.
  • John 15:16 – “You did not choose me, but I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.” God chose you on purpose and gave you a mission: to live a life that shows His love and produces good things that last, like kindness, courage, forgiveness, and faith. And as you follow Him, God will give you what you need when you ask in Jesus’ name.

Being chosen means God sees you, knows you, and has included you in His story.

  1. God Planned Our Purpose Ahead of Time

Paul says we were “predestined according to His plan.” God’s plan is steady, intentional, and full of hope.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation:

  • Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you” – this is the LORD’S declaration – “plans for your well-being, nor for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” God is saying, “I already know the good plans I’ve made for your life. I’m not here to harm you…I’m here to give you peace, hope, and a future you can trust.” It’s His way of reminding you that your story is safe in His hands.
  • Psalm 139:16 – “Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began.” God saw you even before you were fully formed, and He already knew every day of your life. Nothing about your story is random… every moment is held in His hands and planned with love.

God is not improvising. He is purposeful in every season.

  1. God Works Everything Out

Paul says God “works out everything” according to His will. That means He is present in:

  • the good days
  • the stressful days
  • the confusing days
  • the ordinary days

Connecting Scripture & Explanation:

  • Romans 8:28 – “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”  God promises that He can take every part of your life… the good, the hard, and the confusing… and work it into something good when you love Him and follow His purpose. Nothing is wasted in His hands.
  • Proverbs 16:9 – “A person’s heart plans his way, but the LORD determines his steps.” We make our plans and decide where we want to go, but God is the One who guides our steps. He leads us in the right direction, even when we don’t see it yet.

God is always at work, even when we don’t see it.

  1. Our Hope Is Anchored in Christ

Believers are people who “put our hope in Christ.” Hope isn’t wishing—it’s trusting.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation:

  • Hebrews 6:19 – “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.” Jesus is the anchor that keeps our hearts steady. Our hope in Him is strong and secure, and it reaches all the way into God’s presence…the safest place we could ever be.
  • Romans 15:13 – “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” God is the One who fills your heart with real hope. As you trust Him, He pours joy and peace into your life until you’re overflowing with hope… the kind only the Holy Spirit can give.

Hope in Christ becomes the anchor that steadies us through every challenge.

  1. Our Purpose Is to Reflect God’s Glory

Paul ends with purpose: our lives exist “for the praise of His glory.”

Connecting Scripture & Explanation:

  • Matthew 5:16 – “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”  Let your life shine with God’s goodness so people notice the way you live and are drawn to Him. Your kindness, courage, and love point others back to God.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”  Whatever you do, even ordinary things like talking to people, how you treat your siblings/parents/people around you, how you work/study, do it in a way that shows God’s goodness and honors Him. Every part of your life can point back to Him.

When we all choose kindness, forgiveness, honesty, and courage, we shine with God’s glory.

Family Connection: Living Inside God’s Plan

Paul’s words remind us that:

  • God chose us
  • God has a plan for us
  • God is working in every moment
  • Our hope is anchored in Christ
  • Our purpose is to reflect His glory

This identity shapes how we treat one another, how we face challenges, and how we live out our faith at home, at school, and in our community.
