Ephesians 1:13-14

“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of His glory.”

Paul continues his blessing by showing us something deeply comforting: God didn’t just save us…He secured us. These verses help us see that our identity is not fragile or uncertain… it is sealed, protected, and guaranteed by the Holy Spirit.

Message of Truth: The true story of Jesus that shows us who He is and how He saves us. Like hearing the real instructions that help you finish a project the right way.

Gospel of Salvation: The good news that Jesus rescues us from sin and brings us into God’s family. Like someone pulling you safely out of deep water and bringing you to shore.

Believed: Trusting Jesus with your whole heart. Like sitting in a chair because you know it will hold you up.

Seal: A mark that shows ownership, protection, and authenticity. Like a teacher stamping your paper to show it’s approved and belongs to you.

Holy Spirit: God’s presence living inside every believer. Like a helper who guides, comforts, and strengthens you every day.

Deposit: The first part of something that promises more is coming. Like paying a small amount now to guarantee the whole gift later.

Inheritance: Everything God promises His children—life with Him forever. Like a treasure kept safe for you until the right time.

What Paul Says About Us

  1. We Are Included in Christ

Paul says we were “included in Christ” when we heard and believed the gospel. This means God welcomes us fully into His family—no hesitation, no halfway belonging.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation

  • Romans 10:17 – “So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.” This verse teaches that faith grows when we hear God’s Word, especially the message about Jesus. It’s like your heart learning to trust God more every time you listen to His truth.
  • John 1:12 – “But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name….” This verse teaches that anyone who trusts and welcomes Jesus becomes part of God’s family. Believing in Him gives you a brand‑new identity as His child, fully loved and fully accepted.

Being included means you belong—fully, securely, and forever.

  1. We Are Sealed with the Holy Spirit

A seal shows ownership, protection, and authenticity. Paul says God marks believers with His Spirit to show:

  • You belong to Him
  • You are protected by Him
  • You are known and loved by Him

Connecting Scripture & Explanation

  • 2 Corinthians 1:21–22 – “Now it is God who strengthens us together with you in Christ, and who has anointed us. He has also put his seal on us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a down payment.”  Paul is saying that God is the one who gives us strength and confidence in our faith, and He marks us as His own by giving us the Holy Spirit. The Spirit in our hearts is like God’s promise that He will finish everything He started in us.
  • Ephesians 4:30 – “And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by him for the day of redemption.”  We are reminded by Paul not to ignore or disobey the Holy Spirit, because He lives in us and helps us follow God. The Spirit has marked us as God’s own, and He will keep us safe until the day God completes His rescue plan.

God’s seal is His promise: You are mine, and I will keep you.

  1. The Spirit Guarantees Our Inheritance

Paul calls the Spirit a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance. This means the Holy Spirit is the first taste of all God has promised—and He guarantees the rest is coming.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation

  • 1 Peter 1:3–4 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.” Peter is saying that because of God’s kindness, we get a brand‑new beginning and a hope that never dies, all because Jesus rose from the dead. God is keeping a perfect, never‑breaking future for His children safe in heaven, and nothing can ruin or take it away.
  • Romans 8:16–17 – “The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, and if children, also heirs – heirs of God and coheirs with Christ – if indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.”  The Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts and reminds us that we truly belong to God as His children. And because we’re His children, we get to share in everything He promises—even when following Jesus is hard, He will one day share His glory with us.

The Spirit reminds us every day: Your future with God is secure.

  1. Our Lives Bring Praise to God’s Glory

Paul ends by reminding us that all of this—being included, sealed, and guaranteed—is meant to lead us to praise God.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation

  • Psalm 34:1 – “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.”  Praise God no matter what is happening, choosing to keep God’s goodness on his lips in every season. It’s a reminder that worship isn’t just for good days—it’s a steady habit that keeps our hearts focused on Him.
  • Colossians 3:17 – “And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” This means that whatever you say or whatever you do should show that you belong to Jesus. Let your words and actions reflect His love, and remember to thank God as you live in a way that honors Him.

When we live with confidence in God’s promises, our lives shine with His glory.

Family Connection: Living Sealed and Secure

Paul’s words remind us that:

  • We are included in Christ
  • We are sealed by the Spirit
  • Our future is guaranteed
  • Our identity is secure
  • Our lives bring praise to God

This identity gives us the confidence, peace, and hope. It shapes how we treat one another, how we face challenges, and how we trust God in every season.
