Ephesians 1:20-21   Jesus Reigns Above All

“He exercised this power in Christ by raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens – far above every ruler and authority, power and dominion, and every title given not only in this age but also in the one to come.”

Paul continues describing God's incredible power. The same power that Paul mentioned in the previous verses was displayed when God raised Jesus from the dead and gave Him the highest place of honor in heaven. Jesus is not simply a great teacher or leader. He is the risen King who rules over every power, authority, and ruler. Nothing is greater than Christ, and His reign will never end. Knowing that Jesus is alive and reigning gives believers confidence, peace, and hope in every circumstance.

Raised from the Dead: Brought back to life after death. Like a plant that seems lifeless in winter but springs to life again in the spring, only in a far greater and miraculous way.

Seated at His Right Hand: A position of highest honor, authority, and power. Like a trusted ruler sitting beside a king as an honored partner in leadership.

Heavens: The spiritual realm where God reigns. Like the control center from which a ruler governs a kingdom.

Ruler and Authority: Those who possess power or influence. This includes both earthly leaders and spiritual powers.

Power and Dominion: Strength, control, and rule over others. Like a king governing a nation, but Jesus' authority is infinitely greater.

Title Given: Any recognized position, rank, or name of honor. Like receiving an important title, except Jesus' name is above every other name.

This Age and the One to Come: Both the present world and eternity. Jesus' rule extends forever and never ends.

  1. God Demonstrated His Power by Raising Jesus

Paul points to the resurrection as the greatest display of God's power. Jesus defeated sin and death when God raised Him from the grave.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation

Romans 6:9 – “Because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over him.”
Jesus' resurrection was permanent and victorious. Death could not hold Him, and He now lives forever. Because Jesus lives, believers can trust Him completely.

1 Corinthians 15:20 – “But as it is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
Jesus' resurrection gives hope to all who trust in Him. His victory over death assures believers that God's promises are true and that eternal life is secure.

The resurrection reminds us that nothing is impossible for God.

  1. Jesus Has the Highest Place of Honor

After His resurrection, Jesus was seated at God's right hand. This shows that He has been given the place of highest honor and authority.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation

Hebrews 1:3 – “After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”
Jesus completed His work of providing salvation through His death and resurrection. Sitting at God's right hand shows that His mission was accomplished and that He reigns with divine authority.

Philippians 2:9-11 – “For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name.”
God honored Jesus above all others. One day every person will recognize Jesus as Lord and King.

Because Jesus reigns in the highest place, we can trust Him with every part of our lives.

  1. Jesus Is Greater Than Every Power

Paul says Jesus is far above every ruler, authority, power, and dominion. No earthly government, spiritual force, or human leader can compare to Him.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation

Colossians 1:16-17 – “All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and by him all things hold together.”
Jesus created all things and sustains all things. Since everything belongs to Him, no power exists that is outside His authority.

Matthew 28:18 – “Jesus came near and said to them, ‘All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.’”
Jesus possesses complete authority everywhere. There is no situation, challenge, or problem beyond His control.

When life feels uncertain, we can remember that Jesus is always greater than anything we face.

  1. Jesus Will Reign Forever

Paul says that Christ's authority extends not only in this age but also in the age to come. His kingdom has no end.

Connecting Scripture & Explanation

Isaiah 9:7 – “The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end.”
Long before Jesus came to earth, God promised that the Messiah's kingdom would last forever. Jesus fulfills that promise.

Revelation 11:15 – “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.”
One day everyone will see Jesus' complete and eternal rule. His kingdom will last forever, bringing perfect justice and peace.

Because Jesus reigns forever, our hope in Him is secure and unshakable.
